Babies…..why they make caricaturists shudder at the State Fair

You've gotta read this blog post from my friend and fellow caricaturist in the state-fair-trenches, Celestia Ward. In it, she discusses the special place of the human baby as it pertains to the practice of our craft.  Enjoy the sarcasm, but watch out for the profanity!  :-D

In reading her hilarious post, I realized I had never shared our Exaggerated Features comic (the quarterly magazine of ISCA) on the same topic (or if I did, I can't find it) because the editor had asked for articles to remain exclusive to our readership for some time after publication. SO: here it is in all its amniotic glory!

State Fair of Texas comic...by Celestia Ward and yours truly

The most recent issue of ISCA's trade magazine, Exaggerated Features, carried this comic about our time at 2012's State Fair of Texas..and its unintended version of Burning Man!
Can astute observers tell which panels are mine and which are Celestia Ward's? ;-D

Toronto Comic Jam

A couple of weeks ago, the S.O. and I visited our friends Marlo and Nick in the frozen North (Ontario, Canada). Okay, it wasn't frozen, we enjoyed some absolutely lovely late-summer weather. One of the fun things we did was go to a comic jam in the heart of Toronto, with other artists, some familiar and some not:
We commandeered some tables in a funky coffee shop and each person would draw the first panel in a comic, then pass it to someone else. And so on and so on, and so on...
This is one of the few non-racy ones...but it's still gross!  The second panel's mine. If you want to see more, click here: Toronto Comic Jam (warning: off-color but hilarious!) a Tumblr blog started by Seo Kim to show the best of them, colorized. The night we were there we probably drew 25 or more!

Carny Land.

This is our (Celestia Ward's and Emily Anthony's)
comic magnum opus:
Enjoy! We really crammed this one full.
It was published in the most recent edition of our ISCA trade magazine, Exaggerated Features.
Just for kicks, here is the actual Candy Land board game...
And here is a 2010 photo of Celestia, Vlad, myself,  my fiance John (who starred in last year's comic), and Paul at the fair:

We don't know how we can top this one...

2011 Texas comic sneak-peek

The upcoming issue of Exaggerated Features, the quarterly magazine of ISCA, will have our first two-page comic about the adventures of your favorite pair of lady caricaturists at the State Fair of Texas---namely, Celestia Ward and myself. We outdid ourselves this year! Once it is published, I'll share it in its entirety here on my blog.
Here is a tiny, tiny peek:

We actually planned more for this year's comic while we were still actually at the Fair, writing down ideas and happenings last fall while they were fresh. A good day would hear one (or both) of us exclaiming, "THAT'S gotta go in the comic!!"

Here are links to our previous comics:
