Communion party...

Yesterday, my caricatures were the favors at a very nice Communion party, held in a restaurant. Once again,I drew all the children and was then asked to stay longer to draw adults.
One interesting little incident happened while I was drawing a little girl: she shrieked while I was sketching her! It turned out there was a good-sized spider crawling on the back of my easel. When I tried to swat it off, it scurried into the recess of one of the collapsible legs where I couldn't get it. Eventually, it dropped into my bag of plastic bags, which I then closed up and opened another bag!

May NCN sketch contest entry...

This month's victim is Marilyn Manson. Quite a different face than last month's Matt Damon! Judge Jan Opdebeeck's usual rule applied: no digital media. So I drew one version in pencil and another in marler.
BTW, the last several contests have been won by my friend Paul Moyse. Find his blog in my links list...he is a rising star in the caricature world.

Happy birthday, George!

Yesterday was my son's 23rd birthday. I made a caricature for him...a cropped portion of which is on the right.
He received the same type of gift from me when he was 13...on the left. A bit of a difference in quality, huh?? :-)

Last minute gig with more NURSES!

This morning, very very early, I drew as a replacement caricaturist for a colleague who could not make it to a breakfast gig celebrating Nurses' Week! It's funny, ever since drawing my own daughter as a newly-graduated nurse, I've drawn more nurses...:-)
So last night, I got the call asking if I could be at a hospital in Philadelphia by 5:45 am. I happened to be at my fiance's house, which is much closer to the city than my own...but I had no easel, paper, pens, or bags! With the cost of gas what it is these days, going home to get them would have been a drag, but luck was with me. It was a two-artist job; the other artist brought the supplies, and I just brought myself.
The gig gave me a challenge from my usual routine-- but it was kind of fun to see what I could do differently. I worked at a table on a clipboard, used a Markette marker (not my beloved Copic marker) and had to use my cell-phone camera since even my digital camera was forgotten at home.
Of course, none of this mattered to the caricaturees--they had a ball even at that time of the morning!
Moral of story: From now on,there will be an "emergency gig package" in my car.

Country club Communion party...

One of the perks of my caricature career is seeing new places. This afternoon, I drew in this lovely environment, at a young gentleman's 1st Communion party.

Family/Alumni Day at a private school...

On a damp, chilly Saturday afternoon, kids (and dogs!) sat for caricatures at an outdoor Family and Alumni day at their school.
Unusually, I had to use my easel in the 'tabletop' position. The floor area under the tent provided for me was totally taken up with a long table. I didn't care for the added height I had to work at, but on a positive note, my sitters' chairs were at a perfect distance from me. So many people sit down and pull their chairs right up to me, not realizing that I don't need to see them THAT CLOSELY!!

The dog was shy about posing for the photo, after having sat calmly for the caricature!

Feedback on recent convention caricaturing...

I received this email from the project manager whose convention booth spread the fun and laughter of caricature this past week:
"Thanks Emily. You guys were a big hit at ANNA! Thank you so much for bringing your professionalism and creativity to the booth, everyone was greatly impressed and appreciative of your services.
Eric loved the caricature of his boys! Thank you again for everything. I will keep you in mind and let my colleagues know that if they are looking for a fun booth activity that you are the woman to call!
Thanks,
Jennifer"

I love my job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

College gig!

A local university held a 'Senior Fun Day' this afternoon. The easel and I started out outdoors, but then the rain came. My line just picked everything up and moved me, and themselves, into the cafeteria and the caricaturing continued!
